Pectin is used in food as a gelling agent and stabilizer. As a medical drug, it has obtained a great interest in its potential use as a source of dietary fiber, lipid, cholesterol, serum glucose and insulin level lowering effect, gastric emptying delay. Some recent studies have researched the possibility of using pectin for the formation of nanoparticles as a delivery vehicle of drugs.
Pectin increases viscosity and volume of stools which helps it to be used for constipation and diarrhea. It is reported as well to present lowering effects of different body components. This effect depends on the type of pectin which indicated that this effect is related to the composition of the correspondent pectin. Nonetheless, this data is still unclear and more studies need to be performed to conclude this effect of pectin.
Food Additives
Substances used in the processing or storage of foods or animal feed including ANTIOXIDANTS; FOOD PRESERVATIVES; FOOD COLORING AGENTS; FLAVORING AGENTS; ANTI-INFECTIVE AGENTS; EXCIPIENTS and other similarly used substances. Many of the same substances are used as PHARMACEUTIC AIDS. (See all compounds classified as Food Additives.)
A - Alimentary tract and metabolism
A07 - Antidiarrheals, intestinal antiinflammatory/antiinfective agents
A07B - Intestinal adsorbents
A07BC - Other intestinal adsorbents
A07BC01 - Pectin
Absorption
Pectin is not absorbed and it is not distributed in the body.
Route of Elimination
Pectin is completely excreted in the feces, including a small amount of trigalacturonic acid that can be found in the colon.
Volume of Distribution
Pharmacokinetic studies have not been performed as pectin is not absorbed.
Clearance
Pharmacokinetic studies have not been performed as pectin is not absorbed.
Pectin is depolymerized and de-esterified to a very small extent. It passes to the small intestine as a macromolecule and the majority of the pectin is eliminated unchanged.
Pharmacokinetic studies have not been performed as pectin is not absorbed.
Pectin is an adsorbent that binds to bacteria, toxins and other irritants in the intestinal mucosa. Pectin is able to decrease the pH in the intestinal lumen and provides a soothing effect on the irritated mucosa.

ABOUT THIS PAGE
A Pectin manufacturer is defined as any person or entity involved in the manufacture, preparation, processing, compounding or propagation of Pectin, including repackagers and relabelers. The FDA regulates Pectin manufacturers to ensure that their products comply with relevant laws and regulations and are safe and effective to use. Pectin API Manufacturers are required to adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to ensure that their products are consistently manufactured to meet established quality criteria.

A Pectin supplier is an individual or a company that provides Pectin active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) or Pectin finished formulations upon request. The Pectin suppliers may include Pectin API manufacturers, exporters, distributors and traders.

A Pectin DMF (Drug Master File) is a document detailing the whole manufacturing process of Pectin active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in detail. Different forms of Pectin DMFs exist exist since differing nations have different regulations, such as Pectin USDMF, ASMF (EDMF), JDMF, CDMF, etc.
A Pectin DMF submitted to regulatory agencies in the US is known as a USDMF. Pectin USDMF includes data on Pectin's chemical properties, information on the facilities and procedures used, and details about packaging and storage. The Pectin USDMF is kept confidential to protect the manufacturer’s intellectual property.

Pectin Active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) is produced in GMP-certified manufacturing facility.
GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practices, which is a system used in the pharmaceutical industry to make sure that goods are regularly produced and monitored in accordance with quality standards. The FDA’s current Good Manufacturing Practices requirements are referred to as cGMP or current GMP which indicates that the company follows the most recent GMP specifications. The World Health Organization (WHO) has its own set of GMP guidelines, called the WHO GMP. Different countries can also set their own guidelines for GMP like China (Chinese GMP) or the EU (EU GMP).
PharmaCompass offers a list of Pectin GMP manufacturers, exporters & distributors, which can be sorted by USDMF, JDMF, KDMF, CEP (COS), WC, API price, and more, enabling you to easily find the right Pectin GMP manufacturer or Pectin GMP API supplier for your needs.
A Pectin CoA (Certificate of Analysis) is a formal document that attests to Pectin's compliance with Pectin specifications and serves as a tool for batch-level quality control.
Pectin CoA mostly includes findings from lab analyses of a specific batch. For each Pectin CoA document that a company creates, the USFDA specifies specific requirements, such as supplier information, material identification, transportation data, evidence of conformity and signature data.
Pectin may be tested according to a variety of international standards, such as European Pharmacopoeia (Pectin EP), Pectin JP (Japanese Pharmacopeia) and the US Pharmacopoeia (Pectin USP).
